Back-to-School: Preparing Your Dog for Changing Routines
As the summer days wind down and the back-to-school season approaches, many families are preparing for a return to more structured routines. But while parents and children gear up for the school year, it’s important to remember that these changes also affect our four-legged family members.
For dogs, the shift from summer fun to quieter days at home can be a big adjustment. Here’s how you can help your dog transition smoothly into the new routine.
1. Gradually Adjust Their Schedule
Just like us, dogs thrive with a routine, and changes to that routine can lead to behavioral challenges. To set your dog up for success, start adjusting your dog’s schedule a week or two before school starts.
If your dog has been enjoying later meals or walks during the summer, start gradually shifting these activities back until the timing aligns with the new school routine. This way, your dog won’t be shocked by sudden changes in their daily rhythm.
2. Create a Calm Environment
With the house suddenly quieter during the day, your dog may feel lonely or anxious. Set up a cozy space where your dog can relax.
A favorite blanket, a few toys, and some calming background music can make a big difference. Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys can also keep them engaged while you're away.
3. Maintain Quality Time
Although everyone’s schedules will be busier, it’s important to carve out quality time with your dog. Morning and evening walks, playtime, or even a cuddle session can help reassure your dog that they are still an important part of the family.
If your dog is used to long walks and summer adventures, set aside time on the weekends for exploring new hiking trails or parks. The fun doesn’t have to end just because your schedule has changed.
4. Consider a Pet Sitter or Dog Walker
If your dog struggles with being alone, consider hiring a pet sitter or dog walker. Regular visits can break up the day, offer physical and mental exercise, and provide some much-needed companionship.
Be sure to leave your dog walker with all the necessary equipment for a successful walk with your dog, like a durable, waterproof leash to make clean-up after a muddy, fall walk easier.
Help Your Dog Adjust to Change
By planning ahead and making small adjustments, you can help your dog smoothly transition into the back-to-school season, ensuring a happy and healthy start to the school year for everyone.
