5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe This Fall

As the leaves begin to change and temperatures cool, fall is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor adventures with your dog. However, the season also brings unique challenges and potential hazards that pet parents should be aware of.

Here are some essential fall safety tips to keep your dog happy and healthy.

1. Watch Out for Toxins

Fall is a prime time for certain plants and mushrooms to flourish, some of which can be toxic to dogs. Keep an eye out for mushrooms in your yard or on walks, and make sure your dog doesn’t eat anything they find.

Additionally, be cautious with small fall decorations that your dog could ingest, as well as Halloween candy that is toxic to dogs.

2. Beware of Cold Weather

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, make sure your dog is prepared for the cooler weather. While some dogs may thrive in cool weather, others, especially smaller breeds or those with short coats, may need additional layers to stay safe. Be mindful of cold, wet conditions, which can lead to hypothermia if your dog is not adequately protected.

3. Be Cautious Around Rodenticides

As the temperatures fall, rodents can start to seek warmth indoors, leading many people to reach for rodenticides to protect their homes. These chemicals are extremely toxic to dogs, so be sure to keep them out of reach and clean up any spills immediately.

If you suspect your dog has ingested a rodenticide, contact your vet right away.

4. Adjust Walking Habits

With the days getting shorter, you may find yourself walking your dog in lower light conditions. Make sure both you and your dog are visible by using reflective gear,  brightly-colored leashes and collars, and a flashlight. This is especially important when walking near roads or in areas with low visibility.

5. Watch Out for Seasonal Allergies

Just like in spring, fall can bring its own set of allergens. Pollen from late-blooming plants, mold from fallen leaves, and dust can trigger allergies in dogs.

Watch for signs of itching, sneezing, or watery eyes. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, consult your vet for advice on managing seasonal allergies.

Enjoy a Safe, Fun Fall with Your Dog

There are so many fun experiences to enjoy with the changing season. By staying aware of these seasonal risks, you can ensure that you and your dog enjoy a safe and happy fall together.
